As the title says, these were jobs I was commissioned for from clients, normally design firms, advertising agencies, and (once established), Fortune 50 companies. This was my goal starting out to accomplish this, as did most of my competitors who wanted to do the same. It’s highly competitive and high stressful. However it is also highly rewarding when the image comes out just right and the compensation is also worthy of your time and effort. Most of the images seen here were shot on film, so no one knew for sure if the image was good until you got the film back the next day! Also, many of the images were shot with a view camera. which took years to learn how to work well. Shooting 35mm or medium format was like going on vacation. The reason for the different formats was reproduction quality, the smaller cameras just didn’t have the same range to fill a 8×10 image without grain. Complicated still-life took looking at 8×10 polaroids until the composition was perfect. This could take 25-40 polaroids (over 8 hours) before the art director would sign their name to the final shot. The shooting would take 10 minutes after a full day of changes to the shot, sometimes the change was a quarter of an inch or smaller.
